The Salt River Market redevelopment has been positioned by the City of Cape Town as an initiative aimed at addressing the need for inner-city housing.

Yet, amid grand plans and hopeful promises, local resident associations have voiced concerns about the reality that many of the city's most vulnerable, particularly the poor and elderly, may face in this new landscape.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis yesterday officially handed over the site for the construction of 970 inner-city affordable housing units by developer Communicare.

He was joined by mayco member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim, and Mark van Wyk, chairperson of Communicare NPC.
