ILOILO CITY — Nearly 18,000 people were staying in evacuation centers on Monday evening, June 8, following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Maasim, Sarangani earlier in the day, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported.

The DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) said the powerful quake affected 56 barangays across Regions IX, XI, and XII, impacting 19,229 families or 86,245 individuals.

Of these, 5,043 families or 17,880 individuals were sheltered in 33 evacuation centers established by local government units.
