The association noted with concern that despite the growing number of attacks, fewer than five cases had been charged to court, while only one assailant had been convicted.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared the growing wave of assaults, harassment, intimidation, kidnappings, and violent attacks against healthcare workers across Nigeria a National Health and Security Emergency, warning that the trend poses a grave threat to the country's healthcare system and national stability.
The association, under the leadership of its President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, expressed concern over the alarming rise in attacks on doctors and other healthcare workers while carrying out their professional duties.
In a statement jointly signed on Monday by NARD President, Dr. Suleiman; Secretary-General, Dr. Shudlibu Ibrahim; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, the association said the attacks had reached an intolerable and dangerous level capable of crippling Nigeria's already fragile healthcare system.
The statement read, "The continuous attacks on doctors and other healthcare workers while discharging their lawful professional duties have reached an intolerable and dangerous dimension capable of crippling Nigeria's already fragile healthcare system."
