A 55-year-old man in Thessaloniki has been fined a total of €270,300 after abandoning nine kittens on the roadside, a penalty he says far exceeds anything he has earned in his working life.
The incident occurred Saturday evening in the Kalamaria suburb of the city, where the man was captured on video leaving the animals in a remote area.
According to authorities, two women questioned his activities at the scene and later alerted police, who quickly identified him.
The man reportedly told the women he abandoned the kittens because he could not afford to feed them or buy litter, adding that his son had brought home two unsterilized cats that later gave birth.
