across India are participating in a six-day training programme
at NIT-K, Surathkal.

A six-day training programme on ‘Health and Safety and OSHWC Code - 2020 in Mines’ for mining professionals began at the National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, on Monday.Organised by the Department of Mining Engineering at the institute, it has brought together 31 professionals from leading mining organisations across India for structured training in mine health, safety management systems, and the Union government’s unified Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.Participating professionals represent a cross-section of the mining sector, drawn from organisations including Coal India Limited, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), JSW Steel (Goa and Bellary operations), Fomento Resources Private Limited (Goa), Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited (KSMCL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) — Panna, Kirandul Complex, and Bailadila Complex — Vedanta Limited (Iron Ore), NRB Group, and Ecomine, a NIT-K release said.The programme covers mine safety engineering concepts, risk assessment-based safety management systems as per the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) framework, human factors in accident analysis, behaviour-based safety, noise measurement and control, machine-induced vibration, computer-based statistical analysis of injury data, and the implications of the OSHWC Code-2020 for the mining sector.The programme aims at equipping mining personnel with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify and control workplace hazards, implement safe working procedures, promote effective use of protective equipment, and build a strong organisational safety culture. It also seeks to familiarise participants with the mine-specific provisions of the OSHWC Code-2020 and Union government’s new unified safety and welfare framework for the sector.In addition to classroom sessions, participants will undertake visits to NIT-K’s specialised laboratories, the Model Mine, the Digital Library, KIOCL’s Pellet Plant (in Mangaluru), and the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA).The NIT-K has a dedicated Mine Health and Safety Laboratory.s Published - June 08, 2026 10:33 pm IST
