A woman married to a convicted murderer still does not believe he murdered his first wife, despite him telling his son where he had buried her.Deborah Griggs married Andrew Griggs after his first wife Debbie disappeared in 1999 - he was later convicted of her murder.Police found Debbie's body inside a sealed water butt in 2022, buried under Andrew's back garden in Dorset.It came after his son claimed Andrew had told him to dig up Debbie's body, remove strands of her hair and mail them back with a letter to 'prove' she was still alive.But Deborah described her husband as 'a true gentleman' and a devoted father.She added: 'He's very generous. He would give up something so someone else could have it.' 'He was the sort of person that, as the advert says, would give you the last Rolo. He's a true gentleman, very protective of his family.'Deborah said Andrew had told her about his missing wife when their relationship began after they met in 2005.She said Andrew had mentioned he 'had something to tell me' and there was 'something you need to know'. He said that he hadn't murdered his wife. She had gone out one night and not come back. He gave me the option of walking away.'But she stayed with him, saying: 'I'd already got to know him, I'd felt quite strongly for him, and I told him I'm not going anywhere.'In 2015 Debbie's family complained to Kent Police after a KentOnline article listing unsolved cases in the county did not include the missing mother-of-three, who had been pregnant with her fourth boy upon her disappearance.Detectives reopened the case and found former fisherman Andrew had murdered his first wife while his three sons slept upstairs.He later told Jeremy, then six, Jake, four, and 18-month-old Luke that their mother had left them.But he had sealed Debbie's body in a plastic water butt, sealed it in fibreglass and hidden it in his parents' back garden.Two years later, when the family moved from Kent to Dorset, Andrew took the water butt containing Debbie's body and buried her under a concrete shed base at the side of their house in the village of St Leonard's, near Bournemouth.Her body was not found for years after Andrew was convicted of Debbie's murder in 2019 and jailed for life with a minimum term of 20 years.Days after his conviction, he lied to then-25-year-old Jake, telling him he had found Debbie's body in their old back garden and feared his late father - Jake's grandfather - had murdered her. Andrew asked his son to unearth his mother, cut off a lock of her hair, travel to France and post it to British authorities with a letter supposedly from Debbie saying she was alive and wanted to be left alone.After keeping the secret of his mother's whereabouts for three years, Jake let slip the information to his girlfriend during an argument.They went to police with Jake's stepmother to report the information and Andrew was handed a further three years in jail for perverting the course of justice in 2022.Debbie's father Brian Cameron had died the year before after his wife Patricia died 'from a broken heart' without seeing justice for her daughter in 2019.Debbie's brother called for Jake to face charges after Andrew was convicted again, saying 'no one can understand' why he did not come forward sooner to say what he knew.An exact cause of death cannot be determined because Debbie's body was so severely decomposed when she was found - it was recorded as unascertained after her inquest last year.In a new documentary, The Vanishing of Debbie Griggs, Deborah said she was 'aware' of what Andrew had asked Jake to do.After he was sent to prison, Deborah visited Andy to say: 'Tell me the truth, and if you tell me something I know is a lie, I'm out of here.'She said Andrew told her he and his father were loading barrels onto a trailer when he opened one to empty rainwater and discovered what appeared to be a human foot inside. Debbie's body was found in a water butt wrapped in blue tarpaulin. It was so severely decomposed that an inquest could not ascertain a cause of death'He was promptly sick,' she said.Asked whether Andrew believed the remains belonged to Debbie, Deborah said: 'He wasn't 100 per cent.'She claimed her husband told her he feared reporting the discovery would lead police to suspect him of murder and so he and his father decided to do nothing.'I don't condone the decision, but I understand why he did it,' she said.'I believe he's innocent. I don't think he killed his wife.
