Seeking immediate disbursal of money for paddy procured from agriculturists, a group of farmers, who are staging a series of protests in the district to press the demand, submitted a petition to Collector Anand Mohan on Monday. The petitioners, led by D. Abraham, Tirunelveli district secretary of Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Associations Coordination Committee, said the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF), which was involved in guaranteeing minimum support price for food grains procured from cultivators, purchased paddy from farmers by setting up procurement centres at 30 places in Tirunelveli district. The growers sold tonnes of ‘pisanam’ season paddy to NCCF.Instead of giving the assured minimum support price, NCCF had been delaying disbursement for more than three months leaving the farmers, facing medical, house rent and educational expenses, in serious trouble. “Despite repeated appeals and protests by the farmers, no action has been taken by NCCF to disburse the arrears. Hence, we have decided to wait at the Collectorate from June 15 until our money is disbursed,” said Mr. Abraham.Another group of farmers led by S. Thalavai of Keezhapaattam near Palayamkottai also submitted a petition with a similar appeal. The agitated farmers were told that the officials were in touch with NCCF for early disbursal of the paddy procured from them.A group of villagers from Keezha Pillaiyarkulam near Maanur submitted a petition seeking drinking water overhead tank in their hamlet for streamlining the drinking water supply. They also sought the installation of a transformer in Keezha Pillaiyaarkulam to address the perennial low-voltage problem. “The district administration should also address civic issues such as damaged roads and sewage channel.” Published - June 08, 2026 06:58 pm IST
