Eau by Tushy with remoteTushyWay back in 2018, Miki Agrawal had a crazy concept: to break America’s addiction to toilet paper by getting them to start using bidets instead. Her company’s product was an under-seat bidet that took 10 minutes to install and cost under a $100. Her cheekily named company, Tushy, went viral with marketing that leaned hard into the poo puns and ideas that challenged the status quo of bathroom behavior. Indeed, even just discussing bathroom habits beyond what brand of toilet paper you prefer was a novel concept at the time. Then Covid hit and suddenly toilet paper was all anyone wanted to talk about. The TP shortages of 2020 were a bizarre symptom of the cultural panic and uncertainty surrounding that time. As people tried to buy entire warehouse pallets of toilet paper, add-on bidets like Tushy suddenly had their moment to shine. Suffice to say, once people tried what the rest of the world has been using for decades, bidets and smart toilets went from being niche luxury devices to sought after necessities. Even six years on, those who made the switch in the early 2020s remain converts. The challenge now is to get those who’ve installed add-on bidets to upgrade to seat replacement and full toilet units. Tushy has been offering increasingly sophisticated devices over the past six months. The company's latest seat-replacement bidet, the Aura, is a $599, auto-opening bidet with UV sterilization, temperature control for the water and seat, a digital display, and a remote. It's a far cry from the (now slightly higher than $100) third-generation Classic under-seat bidet and shows how much the company has evolved over the past 8 years. MORE FOR YOUTushy’s Next StepEau by Tushy is a low-profile tankless toilet with integrated bidetTushyHaving taken seat replacement bidets nearly as far as they could, it makes sense then that Tushy's next big leap is into total toilet replacements. The Eau Smart Toilet was designed to bridge the gap between seat-replacement bidets (which on their own can cost a couple thousand dollars) and integrated smart toilets that are $5,000 or more. The Eau is a one-piece, tankless toilet with an integrated bidet. It uses a ceramic heating system to heat water up to 102°F instantly and will warm the seat up to 108°F. The integrated dryer has six thermal settings up to 131°F. The Eau uses UV light to sanitize the oscillating wand in-between uses. There's also a built-in night light. Simple controls make it easy to useTushyThere’s a digital display on the unit that shows your current water temperature and other status indicators but it’s an otherwise minimal interface. At the base of the unit, there's a foot-activated button to open the lid and flush. On the side, there's a nozzle and spray operation button/knob. You can also use the included remote control. Cloud Spray is Tushy's solution for your filthy toiletTushyThe Eau also has an integrated auto-foam cleanser the company calls Cloud Spray. Deployed automatically when the toilet is activated (you can adjust this to be a manual activation as well), it does triple duty as an odor barrier, splash preventer, and bowl cleaner. Yes, it means that you have one more consumable subscription in your life (at $16 dollars per month). But this one is cleaning your toilet with every use, so I can't really be that mad at it. Manual or automatic operation, you can chooseTushyThe Eau gives you options when it comes to the auto-opening sensor lid. It uses a sensor on the foot-activated flush button that you can tap to open the lid (you can also use the remote). If you want, you can also set either the lid or both the lid and the seat to open when you approach. It’s actually a smart choice. While auto-open sensors are convenient (and amusing when the toilet scares visitors the first time they walk into the bathroom), they can also be prone to accidental activation. There have been times when I’ve had to unplug my seat-replacement bidet because it wouldn't stop activating. Giving users a manual, but still hands-free, option is a smart choice. Cost and Availability The Eau is the most expensive product in Tushy's line up at $1,599 (that includes your first Cloud Spray refill). However, given that it's meant to compete in a category where unit prices can run as high as $15,000, the company is once again positioning itself as a high-quality bargain option in this market. This is a full toilet replacement, so you’ll have to be confident in your plumbing skills (or have a the number of a good plumber). I will say, having installed a few toilets, it’s one of the more straightforward home installations you can do. Though when they say "have a helper," they mean it. At nearly 100 lbs., maneuvering the Eau into place can be tricky. You’ll also need a GFCI outlet within three feet of your toilet (you can use an extension cord, but the GFCI is non-negotiable). A battery backup is available, but it uses 10 AA batteries and is only meant to keep your Tushy operating for one hundred flushes, so it’s not meant to be a permanent solution. Though if Tushy were to release a rechargeable battery pack for the Eau, that’d be extremely nice for those with older homes that don’t have outlets by the toilet. You can pre-order yours (professional installation not included) on the Tushy website.
