MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday said the government will appeal the findings of a United States agency proposing to impose additional tariffs on the country, saying that the Philippines has a robust legal framework against forced labor.
According to Palace press officer Claire Castro, the country opposes forced labor and can defend itself against recent findings of a US investigation regarding the country’s lack of safeguards for forced labor-related imports.
Citing a statement from the Office of the President, Castro said the government is reviewing the report of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and will coordinate with US officials through appropriate channels to demonstrate the country’s compliance with labor laws and its condemnation of all forms of forced labor.
