The Springbok Sevens' historic 2026 campaign was built on collective excellence, but as the celebrations subsided in Bordeaux on Sunday, one individual story stood out above the rest.

While coach Philip Snyman reflected on a season that delivered both the HSBC SVNS Series title and a successful defence of the World Championship crown, Tristan Leyds was still trying to process being named HSBC SVNS Men's Sevens Player of the Year and featuring in the Men's SVNS Dream Team, alongside teammate Shilton van Wyk.

The award capped a remarkable year for the 28-year-old playmaker and served as recognition of a player who has become central to the Blitzboks' resurgence under Snyman.

"I am so very, very proud of this team, and to win both the World Series and the World Championship is a special feat indeed," said Snyman, after the Blitzboks secured the season's biggest prize despite finishing fourth on the final day in France.
