As we observe National Youth Day on June 16, we are reminded of the vital role young people can play in transforming our communities and building a better world. Youth have the energy, enthusiasm, and capacity to help shape the societies of the coming decades.
“The transformation which is to occur in the functioning of society” says the Universal House of Justice, the international governing council of the Bahá’í Faith, “will certainly depend to a great extent on the effectiveness of the preparations the youth make for the world they will inherit”.
Preparing young people to contribute meaningfully to society involves their acquiring useful qualifications and spiritual qualities. It requires their developing a high-minded outlook and an upright character. Education remains one of the most effective means of channelling the energies, talents, aspirations of our youth towards advancement of their communities. However, it is important that education guides young people not only in their intellectual development but also in their moral empowerment, enabling them to build more just and united societies.
