Chuck D has been a prominent voice in music and popular culture dating back to the 1980s when he first became the lead emcee for legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy. But to know Chuck is to know he is also a big sports fan. And like many New York natives, he’s excited about the New York Knicks being in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 — and being up 2-0 after taking both road games against the San Antonio Spurs. Those who follow Chuck on X are familiar with his strong opinions on sports.“I’m what they call a fan, but when the pros and ex-players talk, I just sit quietly because there’s a lot of talk by everybody,” he said. “Everybody’s got a podcast, everybody’s got analysis and all that.“I just watch, and the only thing I bring to the game is I’ve been a fan since the ’60s.”Respectfully, Chuck is more than a fan. He’s a music icon — a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 2013 — who tells his sports stories and offers his takes through illustrations. While some fans express themselves on social media with words only, Chuck puts together quick drawings of game-related themes to communicate his views. He also uses illustrations to address topics in and out of music. In an attempt to further connect to his fans, rather than signing autographs, Chuck prefers giving “sketchographs,” custom pieces of art personally designed by him as a gift.Lately, his artwork has focused on his beloved Knicks.
