A breakthrough in forensic science leads to the long-awaited conviction of Mzimkhulu Binda, who received a life sentence for the brutal rape of a 21-year-old woman.
The wheels of justice turned slowly for a rape victim whose case was finally solved through a DNA breakthrough. Two decades after the crime, the rapist was handed a life sentence for the rape of a 21-year-old woman.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the conviction and sentencing and said the successful prosecution underscores the crucial role of forensic science and DNA technology in resolving serious crimes.
Mzimkhulu Binda, 48, was convicted by the Welkom Regional Court for housebreaking, rape, and kidnapping committed against a 21-year-old woman in a case that remained unsolved for years.
NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said: “Evidence presented before the court revealed that on the night of the incident in 2006, the victim was asleep at her residence with two minor children when she awoke to find a shadow standing over her bed.
