Lawmakers are pressing EU institutions to help fund a monument outside the European Parliament commemorating victims of communist and fascist regimes
Two decades after joining the EU, central and eastern European countries once behind the Iron Curtain are poised to leave a lasting mark on Brussels – quite literally.
Support is gathering for a new monument outside the European Parliament that would display hundreds of letters written by victims of 20th-century totalitarian regimes, engraved onto large paving slabs.
Known as An Echo in Time, the installation would be built on the Esplanade Solidarność, a busy pedestrian route used daily by EU officials, lobbyists and visitors travelling between Luxembourg station and Parliament.
“I feel we have more and more understanding from other member states,” said Nerijus Aleksiejūnas, Lithuania’s ambassador to the EU.
