A council has installed four zebra crossings on a 90-yard stretch of road causing traffic chaos. The traffic calming measures on Scotland Road in Nelson, Lancashire, were implemented to improve pedestrian safety. But many frustrated motorists are speeding through them, it has been claimed.A fifth zebra crossing has also been installed on an adjoining street just yards from a busy roundabout. And now businesses have complained that the gridlocked road has hit trade.Ikram Sharif, who co-owns Super Auto Saver, said: 'The council just does not have a clue. Why do you need four crossings so close to each other? 'There is another just after the roundabout so when an HGV is turning right and someone is crossing, it blocks both roads and nothing can get past.'Just look at the traffic jam it causes. This is the main road into town and to and from the motorway but it is just blocked daily. Pictured: Scotland Road in Nelson, Lancashire, where the installment of FOUR zebra crossings has caused carnage on the streets 'They've removed the parking spaces, narrowed the road to make a cycle path and put in zebra crossings to improve the route but it's made things worse.'The 40-year-old added: 'My father started the business and we have been here 40 years.'The traffic is putting people off coming to the shop and it is affecting business. Who wants to sit in traffic for 20 minutes just to nip to the shop?'The town doesn't have enough big stores to attract shoppers, so people are staying away.'Philip Knowles, 78, said: 'It is just ridiculous. What a waste of money. 'The money would have been better spent on business to attract people into town not put them off.'It is a busy road but all the zebra crossing are just clogging it up.'They've also put cycle paths in which is also pretty pointless. It's hardly a hotspot for cyclists. You could stand here all day and be lucky if you see two cyclists.'Pedestrian Josh Samuels, 25, said: 'You take your life into your own hands trying to cross this road. Cars speed down it, and most of the time don't bother stopping.'They don't even stop at the roundabout so they are not going to stop for someone using the crossing!'They've widened the pavements but that was a waste of time too. Having so many crossings is complete overkill.'The redevelopment works are part of a £55million investment programme across East Lancashire.Lancashire County Council's Safer, Greener and Healthier Streets programme is designed to make the streets safer, more accessible and support healthier travel choices. The venture is funded by £49.6million from the Government's Levelling Up Fund, with an additional £5million contribution from Lancashire County Council. Residents have said the council's decision to install the crossings, as part of a £55million investment programme, is 'complete overkill'At the launch, Brian Moore, Lancashire county councillor and cabinet member for economic development, said: 'Residents in Pendle will start to see real, visible improvements to their local streets as this work gets under way.'By making streets safer and easier to use, we're helping people in Nelson, Brierfield and Colne to get around more easily and supporting healthier, more active communities.'A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: 'The zebra and parallel pedestrian and cycle crossings on Scotland Road and Clayton Street have been introduced as part of the Accessible Nelson scheme, which is designed to make it safer and easier for people to move around the town and access local businesses and amenities.'The scheme was developed following extensive public engagement and detailed design work, and forms part of a wider package of changes to improve accessibility and support walking and cycling.'As with any major change to the road layout, traffic conditions can take time to settle, and we will continue to monitor the scheme as the works progress.'
