The Tamil Nadu government has not taken any decision yet on the smart meter project, Minister for Energy Resources and Law R. Nirmalkumar said on Sunday.He was speaking to journalists in Madurai against the backdrop of media reports that the project was being abandoned. Mr. Nirmalkumar said, “The project requires a huge investment. A comprehensive study is being carried out to assess its technical and economic viability.”He said the government was also studying whether the modem and SIM card technology used in smart meters would work properly in all areas, especially at places with low signal strength.In accordance with the guidelines of the Central government, surveys were being taken up for installation of smart meters at government buildings in the first phase, and the performance of more than one lakh smart meters, already installed at T. Nagar in Chennai, was being analysed.Mr. Nirmalkumar said studies were being conducted to find out how the project was being implemented in other States and countries.
