Despite it being rejected over 50 times, when Marcia Hutchinson finally got her debut novel published, she was rewarded with a place on the shortlist for this year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction.

The book, The Mercy Step, is a dark yet comic coming-of-age tale loosely based on her own experiences of growing up the child of West Indian parents in Bradford.

She returned to the city to tell Andrew Misra about how her many life experiences inform her work.
