Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc said he was made to “look like an idiot” after crashing out at his home grand prix in Monaco on Sunday. After Lance Stroll hit the wall at the final corner on lap 60, bringing out the safety car, 28-year-old Leclerc collided with the wall during the restart at the same turn in near-identical fashion eight laps later.Replays showed that both drivers had run over a piece of broken-up asphalt just before the final corner, though both put their crashes down to braking issues.Leclerc, who was running in third before the crash, was audibly frustrated over the radio after hitting the wall and said that he would not accept any blame for the incident. After the race, he described the situation as “borderline dangerous”.“It doesn’t help to have asphalt that is coming off but data speaks for itself,” Leclerc told Sky Sports.“It’s extremely frustrating. I’ve always been very honest, and no matter how many mistakes I do, I would hate to look at myself in the mirror and see myself finding excuses when I do a mistake. That’s why I’m always bluntly honest whenever I’m in front of cameras, but I’m not going to take any of it today.”The Monegasque driver lamented the sensitivity of the front brakes and the rear brakes providing “no deceleration at all.”“With cold tire temperatures, the inconsistency and tires being more sensitive because you are on the limit, have just been an absolute nightmare,” he continued.“I look like an idiot, and when you look like an idiot for a mistake of yours, it’s fine, but it’s borderline dangerous.”Sunday’s grand prix marked the fourth time that Leclerc has failed to finish at his home race. A brake disc failure saw him crash out on his debut in 2018, before floor damage sustained early in the race in 2019 caused him to retire. In 2021, Leclerc qualified on pole for the first time in Monte Carlo, but crashed during the final minutes of qualifying. The damage caused a left driveshaft failure and meant that he was unable to start the grand prix.Leclerc’s teammate Lewis Hamilton made it back-to-back second place finishes races on Sunday and moved into second in the drivers’ championship, overtaking George Russell who finished outside of the points after serving a late drive through penalty. Leclerc is fourth in the championship on 75 points, 15 behind Russell and 16 behind Hamilton.Jun 7, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
