Volunteers cleaned Service Bus Stand area in the city during the monthly cleanliness drive organised by Ramakrishna Mission under its Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan on Sunday.The footpaths in the area and passenger waiting areas at the bus stand were cleaned. The volunteers observed that several walls, including compound and retaining in the area had become unhygienic due to public urination. Using water and cleaning equipment, the team thoroughly washed and cleaned the dirty walls, improving the cleanliness and appearance of the public space. The volunteers also interacted with the public and emphasised the importance of maintaining cleanliness in common areas.Faculty and students of Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy collected waste in the area. They collected discarded plastic waste, food packaging materials, paper waste, and other litter scattered across the bus stand area.A separate team of senior volunteers cleaned the drainage channels in the area. The volunteers removed accumulated debris, plastic waste, silt, and other obstructions that had blocked the free flow of rainwater. This timely intervention, undertaken before the peak monsoon season, will help prevent waterlogging, reduce the risk of flooding, and ensure smooth flow of storm water during heavy rains.The volunteers highlighted the importance of regular maintenance of drainage systems as an essential aspect of urban cleanliness and public health.Abraham Vinayalal Bangera, Pastorate, CSI St. Paul’s English Church, State Bank of India area, Mangaluru launched the drive.Speaking on the occasion, he appreciated the mission and volunteers for continuously inspiring citizens through their dedicated service towards keeping Mangaluru clean.“We must give equal importance to both internal and external cleanliness. While external cleanliness helps create a healthy environment, internal cleanliness builds character and values,” he said.The cleanliness was organised by the mission in association with Swachh Mangaluru Prathishtana supported by MRPL ONGC.
