Madrid, June 7 (EFE).- Exhausted but exhilarated after seeing Pope Leo XIV, hundreds of pilgrims prepared to spend the night outdoors in Madrid, turning schoolyards and parish grounds into makeshift camps as they awaited Sunday’s Mass.
Night had fallen, and so had Ignacio’s energy levels. After the excitement of seeing the pope during his first major public event in Spain, the young pilgrim from Cádiz settled into a makeshift campsite at the public Jaime Vera Institute, near Plaza de Lima.
«We hope to sleep, and if not, we’ll ask the Virgin,» he quipped.
Ignacio is one of around 300 people spending the first night of the pope’s visit at the school, transformed into temporary accommodation for pilgrims.
