Joe Puetz / Getty ImagesBy The Athletic StaffJune 6, 2026 7:08 pm EDT Updated Simone Biles experienced a medical emergency earlier this week that was “one of, if not the scariest experience of my life,” she wrote in a story posted to her Instagram account on Saturday afternoon.Without revealing the specific nature of the emergency, the most decorated gymnast in Olympic history wrote that she almost died because of it.“I’m not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today’s age. But almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week,” Biles wrote.
The 29-year-old posted a series of photos to her story, with the first showing her right arm extended with three medical-type bracelets attached. Text detailing the emergency — which she said occurred while her husband, Indianapolis Colts safety Jonathan Owens, was out of town for practices with his team — captioned the initial photo.“I’ve been in bed resting this week, I’ll explain sooner or later but s/o to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited & or sent flowers.“Loooovveeee y’all.”The next two photos in the story showed a collection of floral bouquets, and the story concluded with a photo captioned “I’ll be here” and showing a bed with two dogs, along with a screenshot of a heart-rate monitor.Biles has won 11 Olympic medals in her gymnastics career, seven of them gold, and 30 World Championship medals.
