Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) (TMC(M)) president G.K. Vasan on Saturday said the State government should take firm action to curb law and order issues and seeking time to address such problems was not acceptable.Speaking to reporters in Erode, Mr. Vasan said incidents affecting law and order continued under the new government and questioned the effectiveness of measures being taken to tackle them. Wrongdoers should fear the consequences of their actions, and the government should enforce the law with an iron hand, he said. Referring to crimes such as theft and chain-snatching, he said people might tolerate some delay in bringing such incidents under control. However, the failure to prevent sexual offences was something the public could not accept, he said.On farmers’ issues, Mr. Vasan said cultivators had begun losing confidence in the government. He alleged that farmers were not consulted on the issue of loan waiver and that the government’s decision had not provided complete relief, leading to protests. The government should function in a manner that reflects the interests of farmers, he said.Condemning the Karnataka Chief Minister’s remarks on the Mekedatu project, Mr. Vasan said the issue required constructive intervention from the Tamil Nadu government. He added that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay should raise the matter strongly.Responding to a question on whether the TMC would stay in the NDA, Mr. Vasan said such decisions would be taken at the time of elections. Political parties often form alliances before elections and maintain cordial relations with alliance partners afterwards, he said, adding that it was premature to discuss future electoral arrangements. He said a meeting of the TMC executive committee would be held on June 14 to discuss the party’s activities, election outcomes and future course of action. Published - June 06, 2026 10:45 pm IST
