Representatives of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Tamil Meenavar Viduthalai Vengaikal have flagged several violations in the functioning of Eden Beach, a Blue Flag certified beach in Puducherry.Addressing a press conference here, CPI (M) secretary S. Ramachandran said the management of Eden Beach has violated several provisions of law. The management of Eden Beach was allowed permission for the development of a retaining wall, strengthening of bund, creation of a wooden boat landing facility, landscaping, establishment of community toilet, ticket counter, rain shelter, ornamental pillars and an entrance arch as the area falls under Coastal Regulatory Zone regulations, he said. However, the management has encroached upon the sand dunes for putting up structures. Concrete structures, including a restaurant, tiled pathways and other buildings violating the CRZ rules have come up. The Pondicherry Coastal Zone Management Authority has even issued a direction to the Tourism department in March this year to demolish all illegal constructions. But till now, no action has been initiated, the CPI (M) leader said.“The violations pertain not just to construction of concrete structures, destruction of sand dunes and riverine areas, the owners have developed the beach in a survey number not allotted to them. They were given permission to develop the beach in the survey number 208 but the constructions have been made in survey number 217. Several areas have been encroached. But authorities have failed to take action against them,” Mr. Ramachandran said.He demanded immediate retrieval of the areas encroached by the owners and demolition of all illegal constructions. The government should recognise the traditional rights of fishermen over the coastal areas, he said. Published - June 06, 2026 09:08 pm IST
