In a statement issued on Saturday by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the commission said it was compelled to clarify the circumstances surrounding Sesugh's death following public reactions and reports about the incident.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports suggesting that a Benue State resident, Asar Michael Sesugh, died in its custody, insisting that the deceased was an escaped detainee who was killed during an exchange of gunfire with operatives of the anti-graft agency.

In a statement issued on Saturday by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the commission said it was compelled to clarify the circumstances surrounding Sesugh's death following public reactions and reports about the incident.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that a distraught woman in Benue State, Ms Jennifer Atsar, accused EFCC operatives of unlawfully killing her 16-year-old son, Sesugh Atsar, days after releasing him on bail over allegations of internet fraud.

Speaking during an interview session, the 35-year-old trader had told journalists that her son was neither a criminal nor a fraudster, insisting that the EFCC fabricated allegations against him after he was allegedly shot dead by one of its operatives in Makurdi on May 23, 2026.
