East and West Godavari teachers’ constituency MLC Borra Gopi Murthy on Friday (June 5, 2026 ) urged the State government to take immediate steps to address the concerns surrounding the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) requirement for in-service teachers. In a representation submitted to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the MLC requested the government to either persuade the Union Ministry of Education to amend the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act relating to TET eligibility or conduct a separate TET exclusively for serving teachers. The appeal comes in the wake of a Supreme Court judgment mandating that all teachers, except those retiring within the next five years, must pass the TET examination. According to the MLC, many teachers who have already completed decades of service may find it extremely difficult to qualify in the current TET format and syllabus. He said that while teachers were making sincere efforts to clear the examination, the existing TET pattern was not suited to experienced in-service teachers who had spent years in classrooms and educational administration. To address these concerns, Mr. Murthy proposed the introduction of a special TET model tailored specifically for serving teachers and suggested that the examination should focus only on the subjects taught by the teachers rather than the broader syllabus prescribed under the current TET system. The MLC further recommended that a uniform minimum qualifying marks be prescribed for all candidates instead of varying pass marks based on caste categories. He also called for the examination to be conducted through a manual, pen-and-paper mode rather than the existing format. Published - June 06, 2026 08:21 pm IST
