Kumbakonam MLA and the Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare R. Vinoth inspected the desilting operations carried out on the Arasalar and “C” and “D” irrigation channels in Kumbakonam area on Saturday.During the inspection, the officials informed the Minister that Arasalar, which branches off from the Cauvery at Mettutheru hamlet in Papanasam taluk, flows through the delta for about 72 km before joining the Bay of Bengal in Karaikal. As the flow of water for irrigation through the river was interrupted by wild growth and other obstructions along the 6.60-km stretch of this river in Kumbakonam area – from Darasuram bridge to Sakkottai bridge, desilting work had been taken up by the Agriculture Engineering department. On the sidelines of his inspection visit, the Minister interacted with farmers at Muzhalai hamlet where he assured them that their grievances would be addressed.Responding to questions from media on whether Mettur dam would be opened for irrigation on the scheduled date of June 12, Mr. Vinoth said water would be released soon.
