Head coach Vincenzo Montella believes the youthful brilliance of Arda Güler can give Turkey a crucial edge against World Cup co-host the United States and the rest of a tightly matched Group D.Güler, the 21-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, along with Juventus forward Kenan Yıldız and Inter Milan captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu, leads a Turkey side that many expect to form the biggest group-stage threat to the USMNT. They will meet in their third matches, on June 25 in Los Angeles.Speaking from the Turkish national team’s training camp in Fort Lauderdale before the squad’s friendly against Venezuela on Saturday, Montella said no team should be taken lightly, with Paraguay and Australia making up the rest of the group.“I can say that it is a group made up of teams that are fairly close in quality to one another,” Montella said. “You should never underestimate any group or any opponent. That’s why we must approach it with that awareness.”The spotlight will land on Güler, who will be the face of a squad carrying the country’s highest expectations since its third-place finish at the 2002 World Cup.Montella believes his dynamic playmaker is only just beginning to realize his potential.“When you play for Real Madrid, there is no thought other than winning,” Montella said. “That mindset develops you mentally. He is still very young and a player with tremendous room for growth, and we are ready to support that development here as well.”Vincenzo Montella celebrates after Arda Güler’s goal in the 3-1 win against Georgia at Euro 2024.
