Sofia’s chronic parking shortage has pushed one of Bulgaria’s major retail chains, Kaufland, to introduce a paid parking subscription model across selected hypermarket locations in the capital. The service, which allows drivers to rent a dedicated parking space on a monthly basis, has already attracted strong demand, with the entire 46-space capacity at the Iztok store reportedly sold out within hours of launch.

The new system is currently available at several Sofia branches, including Iztok, Ovcha Kupel, Manastirski Livadi, Izgrev, and Banishora. Monthly prices vary by location, ranging from about 61.35 euros in Manastirski Livadi to 92 euros in Banishora, reflecting differences in demand and location pressure.

Customers are able to reserve a space digitally by scanning a QR code and either logging in with a Google account or creating a new profile. After accepting the terms of use, users must enter their vehicle registration number, ensuring that the parking spot is tied to a specific car. Payments are made online using a bank card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay, with fees calculated proportionally based on the remaining days of the month.

The contracts run until the end of each calendar month, regardless of the date of purchase. Users can then renew or purchase a new subscription during the final week of the month. The system also sends automatic email reminders seven days before expiration, prompting customers to extend their reservation and avoid losing their spot.
