A solar canopy outside a Nay store points to a new use for large asphalt parking areas in Slovakia.

A retail car park in Bratislava is testing an idea that remains uncommon in Slovakia: using parking spaces to generate solar power.

Outside a Nay electronics store near Zlaté Piesky, a canopy fitted with photovoltaic panels has been installed above parking bays, producing electricity while providing shade for parked cars. The project, developed with Slovak energy startup Zenergy, has been operating for about a year and is among the first of its kind in the country, SME reports.

While solar car parks are increasingly common in parts of western Europe, Slovak projects remain limited.

The installation was built on an existing asphalt surface without excavation or major construction work. According to Zenergy, 20 parking spaces were covered within several days, with minimal disruption to operations.
