The number of people who died due to fires in the city has increased by 398.96% in one decade, as per Delhi government data. The number of fire calls and deaths has increased from 23,242 and 291, respectively, in 2014-15 to 36,568 and 1,452, respectively in 2024-25, as per Delhi government data. Many factors, including an increase in population, the use of more wood, plastic, and wallpapers in houses, and the use of false ceilings, are some of the reasons for the increase in fire, said Home Minister Ashish Sood.Mr. Sood said that along with other measures, the government is also carrying out a detailed awareness campaign to curb the fires. Increase in use of ACs and change in the type of gas used in ACs, which is now mildly flammable, are also increasing the incidents of fires, an official said. “Given the recent increase in fire incidents, citizens’ vigilance and awareness are crucial. Residential buildings up to 15 meters in height and those with stilt parking up to 17.5 meters in Delhi do not require a Fire Department NOC. So, the responsibility of residents living in such buildings increases even more,” reads an awareness letter being issued by the government to all electricity consumers. Frequent voltage fluctuations and dimming of lights when operating heavy equipment could indicate a wiring fault, and residents should consult a qualified electrician immediately, as per the letter. “Make sure to install ELCB/RCCB and MCB of the correct rating in homes. In older buildings, get the wiring and meters checked and upgraded periodically to accommodate the increased power load,” it read. Published - June 06, 2026 01:40 am IST
