New Delhi: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is exploring the possibility of making her first visit to India as Prime Minister in July for the annual summit, as Tokyo steps up engagement across Asia amid concerns over China's growing influence. However, the dates of the visit will depend on the schedule of Japan's Parliament (Diet).Takaichi may also visit Assam during the trip. It may be recalled that her mentor, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, had planned to visit the Northeastern state during his tenure, but the trip could not materialise due to logistical issues.During his recent visit to India, the Japanese Foreign Minister held detailed discussions on the evolving defence partnership and economic security cooperation between the two countries."The government is arranging a visit by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to India early next month, when she will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi," leading Japanese daily The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Friday, citing government sources."The visit is aimed at strengthening cooperation in such areas as security, bearing in mind China's increasing economic pressure on other nations. The government will make its final decision on the dates for the visit after assessing the Diet's schedule and other factors," the report said.If the visit materialises, it will be Takaichi's first trip to India since assuming office. The objective is to establish a pattern of reciprocal visits between the two leaders, following Modi's visit to Japan in August last year, according to The Yomiuri Shimbun. The two PMs are also expected to discuss energy security amid the Iran war and ways to strengthen critical minerals supply chains, ET has learnt.
