Hundreds of advocates took out a procession in protest from Madurai District Court to the High Court on Friday condemning the action initiated by Judicial Magistrate V, Madurai, D. Lakshmi Priya, against some advocates for disrupting the court proceedings.The Joint Advocates Association Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Madurai Bar Association members participated in the protest. Advocates held placards and raised slogans. Traffic along the stretch was diverted.Recently, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had dismissed the petitions filed by a group of advocates practising before the Madurai District Court who sought the quashing of the proceedings initiated against them by the Judicial Magistrate for disrupting the court proceedings.Justice L. Victoria Gowri had recorded deep appreciation of the Judicial Magistrate for her fearlessness, integrity and unwavering commitment to judicial duty. What may be perceived by some as stubbornness, the court views as principled firmness, an essential attribute in the discharge of judicial duty, the court had said.The court had said it found no justification to quash the proceedings in their inception and directed the Judicial Magistrate to proceed strictly in accordance with the statutory framework and the advocates should be at liberty to place their factual and legal objections before the Judicial Magistrate.
