Congress nominee for the Rajya Sabha byelection from Tamil Nadu Praveen Chakravarty filed his nomination before Returning Officer P. Thenmozhi at the Secretariat in Chennai on Friday (June 5, 2026).Mr. Chakravarty was accompanied by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, some Ministers, and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram. His candidature was proposed by Mr. Vijay, Ministers N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, S. Keerthana, Vanni Arasu, A.M. Shahjahan, S. Rajesh Kumar, and P. Viswanathan, besides MLAs Tharahai Cuthbert and Y.N. Jamal Mohammed Younoos.Mr. Chakravarty thanked Mr. Vijay, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for giving him the opportunity to contest.He said he would reflect the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha and take up issues concerning the State. Apart from Mr. Chakravarty, four independents — K. Padmarajan, Agni Aalwar, P. Jayakumar, and Tamilselvan Selvamani — have filed their nominations as of Friday.
