Telemundo's coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be carried on Peacock in the U.S. in Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos sound.Photo: Peacock/TelemundoWith less than a week now left to go before the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off in Mexico City, Dolby and NBCUniversal have finally unveiled the news many AV-loving soccer fans have been praying to hear: Telemundo’s coverage of the tournament will be streamed on Peacock in Dolby Vision high dynamic range video, accompanied by Dolby Atmos sound. This premium audio visual experience won’t just be available for a few matches, either. According to the statement put out today, every single one of the tournament’s 104 matches will be getting the full Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos treatment. Dolby Vision, if you’re not familiar with it, enables live streams to be delivered with more lifelike colors, stronger contrast and more detail and depth, while Dolby Atmos puts you right inside the stadium by creating a hemisphere of sound all around your seating position. The Atmos sound transmissions will be bolstered on Peacock’s streams, too, by the first commercial deployment of Dolby’s AC-4 technology. Dolby claims this new codec can deliver as much as 50% more efficiency than traditional codecs, meaning World Cup viewers on Peacock can expect to enjoy greater Atmos fidelity than you would normally get with a live Atmos stream. Dolby AC-4 has also been designed to deliver a new generation of audio personalization and dialogue enhancement features, but while Dolby mentions this fact in its World Cup press announcement, I’ve now had it confirmed that no personalization features will be available with Peacock’s World Cup coverage. NBCUniversal announced at the CES in January this year that its Peacock service was going to become the first streamer to deploy all of Dolby’s sound and vision technologies across a wide range of its 2026 content, from movies and TV shows to live sports. I held out some hope then that this new era of premium quality coverage might extend to the World Cup, but it’s great to now have this 100% confirmed.MORE FOR YOU“There is no bigger stage in sports, and now Peacock viewers will experience every moment the way it was meant to be seen and heard," says John Couling, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories. "From the energy of the crowd to the emotion on the field, every goal scored, Dolby helps bring fans closer to the experience.”There is a catch of sorts, of course, in that you’ll only be able to experience the full Dolby experience with World Cup games if you have all the kit necessary to unlock it. This starts, of course, with a suitable subscription to Peacock. Beyond that, though, you’ll also need a TV or projector capable of handling the Dolby Vision HDR format (which immediately rules any Samsung TVs out of the equation), and a soundbar or audio separates system capable of playing Dolby Atmos sound. Ideally this soundbar or separates system will include speakers both behind you and above you, too, for a fully immersive surround sound experience. The World Cup officially kicks off with the game between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City at 14:00 EST on June 11.—
