The University of Nairobi has reclaimed its position as Kenya’s highest-ranked university in the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2026 Global 2000 list, placed 1,425th out of 21,291 institutions evaluated worldwide.
The ranking situates the university within the top seven percent globally and secures a 37th-place finish across Africa, marking a return to the national lead after a period in which Kenyatta University had briefly held that spot.
CWUR’s methodology emphasizes objective, verifiable indicators rather than surveys or self-reported measures, assessing institutions on factors including quality of education, alumni employment outcomes, faculty research achievements, and overall research performance.
The University of Nairobi’s strongest showing was in research, where it achieved a global position of 1,371st; its graduate employability rank was 1,596th. The institution’s overall CWUR score for 2026 stood at 68.4.
