In its third and final year at Saratoga Race Course, the Belmont Stakes attracted a field of nine to contest the 10-furlong distance, a quarter of a mile shorter than the customary distance of 1 1/2 miles.Next year, when the total rebuild of Belmont Park is complete, the race known as The Test of the Champion will return to its usual distance. The track at the Belmont Park is a 1 1/2-mile oval, the only one in the country; Saratoga’s track is a mile and an eighth, so for horses to run a 12-furlong race over it, they would either have to change the placement of the finish line or place the starting gate on the turn, a less-than-ideal option. As a result, the New York Racing Association has shortened the Belmont Stakes for its Saratoga sojourn to 1 1/4 miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Travers Stakes.Like Sovereignty, who won the Kentucky Derby last year and skipped the Preakness, Golden Tempo comes to the race off a five-week break. No horse in the race will have run in all three legs of this year’s Triple Crown. He shipped to Saratoga last weekend after completing his final timed workouts at his Keeneland Race Course base. There’s a slight chance of rain forecast for Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs. Keep your eye on the predictions and handicap accordingly, though this field offers a dearth of off-track options.Post time for the Belmont Stakes is 7:04 p.m. ET. Television coverage begins on Fox at 3 p.m. and ends at 6:30 p.m. FS1 will air what it calls “an alternative telecast for the experienced horseplayer” from 4-6:30 p.m. ET, with additional coverage from 6:30-7:30 p.m. FS2 will conclude the day’s broadcasts from 7:30-8:30 p.m.I’ll take a shot with Powershift, betting him to win, but I’ll also put some money on Golden Tempo to win as well (this breaks all kinds of gambling rules, but I’m too fond of the Derby winner not to bet him to win). My $1 exacta box will include those two with Renegade and Commandment (a $12 bet).In post-position order, here’s your look at the field for the Grade 1, $2 million Belmont Stakes.1. Vitruvian Man
