For the third consecutive year, the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel of the Triple Crown, will be contested at Saratoga Race Course at 1¼ miles instead of the traditional 1½ mile distance at Belmont Park. That temporary shift has again transformed the race from a stamina marathon to a demanding Grade 1 built around positioning and trip. Most recent winners stayed within roughly three lengths of the lead before making their move turning for home.Favorites remain dangerous in the Belmont, though far from automatic. This year, Renegade opened at 2-1 odds on the morning line, ahead of Chief Wallabee (3-1) and Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo (9-2). Since 2000, the favorite has won only seven times and completely missed the trifecta eight times. Saratoga also produced overlooked winners such as Dornoch, who paid $37.40 for a $2 win ticket, and Arcangelo, who returned $17.80.Here are some long-shots that could steal this one away from their more popular rivals.No. 5 Ottinho (20-1)Few horses in the field can match Ottinho’s pedigree. The Chad Brown trainee is a half-brother to 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner, and his recent runs suggests he may finally be growing into the form of that famous bloodline. He has steadily improved this spring, culminating in a runner-up finish behind Further Ado in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes. The Belmont’s 1¼-mile distance could also play directly into his strengths. Ottinho has done his best work around two turns and has consistently finished well despite facing stronger competition at each step of the ladder.
