Amazon has shown a next-generation semi-autonomous robot prototype that responds to voice prompts it plans to deploy in its European warehouses in the first half of next year, amid a broader investment in its European distribution network.

The upcoming Proteus robot, shown at an event in its Dartford facility east of London, understands conversational instructions and is capable of determining the best way to execute tasks, the company said.

“You tell it what needs to be done. It figures out the priority, the route, the timing,” said Amazon Robotics vice-president Scott Dresser at the “Delivering the Future” event.
