Advocate Ngcukaitobi pledged to uphold the Constitution without fear or favour during his swearing-in ceremony, marking his formal assumption of duties at South Africa’s highest court on Thursday.
Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC has officially been sworn in as an Acting Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
Ngcukaitobi took the oath of office before Deputy Chief Justice Dunstan Mlambo on Thursday, formally assuming his role at the country's highest court. His acting appointment runs from 1 June to 30 November 2026.
During the ceremony, Ngcukaitobi pledged to be faithful to the Republic of South Africa, uphold and protect the Constitution and the human rights entrenched in it, and administer justice to all people without fear, favour or prejudice, in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
Ngcukaitobi is one of South Africa's most prominent advocates and has appeared in several high-profile constitutional and public interest cases. He is believed to be the first black advocate appointed directly from the Bar to serve as an acting judge of the Constitutional Court.
