New Delhi: Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd and Vadodara-based Ankur Scientific have entered into a partnership to set up an agriculture waste-to-energy project in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, aimed at converting farm residue into thermal energy and biochar while providing farmers an additional income source from crop waste. The plant, which will deploy multi-feedstock gasification technology, is designed to process close to 50 tonnes of agricultural biomass per day. It is expected to generate approximately 90 MWh of thermal energy in the form of syngas and produce nearly 12 tonnes of biochar daily. The facility will accept a range of feedstocks including mango seeds, corncob, cotton stalk, bamboo, and wood chips, residues that are typically discarded or burnt in the open by farmers in the region, Ankur Scientific said in a statement. The syngas produced will be channelled for steam generation in food processing operations, while the biochar output is proposed as a substitute for peat moss in banana sapling cultivation, a significant application given Jalgaon's status as one of Maharashtra's largest banana-producing districts.Ankur Jain, Managing Director of Ankur Scientific, said the project demonstrated how agricultural residues could be converted into multiple value streams. "Projects like this demonstrate how a circular rural economy can create value at every stage, from the farm to the factory and back to the field," he said. The initiative comes against the backdrop of India's push to scale up renewable thermal energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels in industrial applications.Biomass gasification is increasingly being explored as a commercially viable route for decentralised energy generation, particularly in agri-heavy states. The project also aligns with efforts to curb open burning of farm stubble, which remains a major source of air pollution across several states.Jain Irrigation, listed on domestic bourses and present in over 120 countries, is headquartered in Jalgaon, the same district where the project is to be located.
