Cast in the ballet ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’ opening at Artscape Theatre on June 12.
Choreographer Veronica Paeper is back in the rehearsal studio to re-stage ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’, which she first directed as a ballet performance in 1982.
Paeper, who is in her 80s, is directing young dancers from the Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) for this comedy ballet, which promises “tongue-in-cheek humour, glamour, and larger-than-life characters.” This version is set in the 1920s.
“Orpheus in the Underworld is a comedy ballet set to (composer) Jacques Offenbach’s dazzling score, performed live by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra,” reads the synopsis.
“When Eurydice absconds with the dashing Pluto, Orpheus is less than heartbroken. However, the gods intervene and what follows is a riotous journey through Olympus and Hades filled with mischief.
