Firefighters are battling a massive house fire in Gisborne that police say may have been intentionally lit.

Emergency services rushed to the blaze on George St in Mangapapa about 9am on Friday, finding the house already well ablaze.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the property was severely damaged when crews arrived. Three fire appliances from Gisborne responded to the incident.
A fire investigator is at the scene and inquiries into the cause of the blaze are under way.
