:A 47-year-old daily wage labourer was killed and three other workers were injured when the driver of an SUV lost control of the vehicle and hit them on a bridge at Kondapuram village near Walajah on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) on Thursday.The deceased was identified as P. Nila, 47, a resident of Kaveripakkam. Those injured are A. Jothi, 45, R. Guna, 55, and V. Suresh, 24, residents of Kaveripakkam and Nemili villages in the area.Initial inquiry revealed that the SUV, heading from Bengaluru to Chennai, ran over the pedestrians, who were waiting for the private contractor to pick them up for work.The vehicle came to a stop after hitting the railing along the stretch. The incident happened around 7.30 a.m. The driver escaped unhurt.Passers-by rescued the injured persons and admitted them to Government Taluk Hospital in Walajah.Based on an alert, the Kaveripakkam police inspected the spot.The body of the deceased was sent to Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for a post-mortem.The mangled SUV was toed away from the carriageway to restore traffic movement on the route.
