Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman planted a sapling under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (a tree in mother’s name) initiative at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Raichur on Thursday to mark World Environment Day celebrations.The initiative was organised by the district administration with the coordination of SPMCIL under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).Ms. Sitharaman also interacted with students present at the event on how planting trees is important for anything else for a good environment and future generations.“It is every individual’s duty to protect the environment. Plant one tree in your mother’s name. We have to join hands together to ensure more green coverage,” Ms. Sitharaman advised students.Deputy Commissioner Poovitha S. said that under the Bharat Vanna Yojana, 50,000 saplings of local tree species are being planted. Of them, 10,000 will be planted on the district administration premises. The rest of the saplings will be planted in the Raichur Municipal Corporation’s solid waste management unit area.She said that Raichur district has less than 2% green coverage. The initiative will help increase this percentage.Secretary of the Finance Department Sanjay Lohia, Personal Secretary Anirudh Shravan, Chairman of NABARD Shaji Krishnan, Secretary of KKRDB Nalin Atul, CEO Eshwar Kumar Kandoo, Commissioner of Mahanagara Palike Jubin Mohapatra, Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri, Assistant Commissioner Hampanna Sajjan and others were present.
