Alex Scott has told Liverpool fans to expect Andoni Iraola to take the club back to the top of the Premier League by playing a brand of football similar to Jurgen Klopp’s early years on Merseyside.Iraola is expected to replace Arne Slot, who was sacked on May 30, and sign a two-year contract at Anfield after leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season.Scott was coached by Iraola for the last three years at Bournemouth and has established himself as one of England’s most promising young central midfielders. The 22-year-old, who is helping England prepare for the World Cup at their Palm Beach Gardens pre-tournament camp, believes his former coach has similarities to Klopp in how he wants his team to play.“He is obviously a great manager; you see what we have done as a club at Bournemouth and how we have progressed over the three seasons he was with us,” Scott said.“I think the way we press out of possession is very aggressive, maybe similar to the early Klopp teams Liverpool had, that fierce aggressiveness and pressing with the wingers. I would say he is similar to that.“Liverpool fans should definitely be so excited.”Scott has been one of Bournemouth’s standout and most important players under Iraola, culminating in the club finishing sixth in the Premier League last season and securing European football for the first time in their 127-year history. The Spanish coach had already announced his planned departure before the end of the campaign and attracted widespread interest from across Europe in securing his services.Even though taking charge of Liverpool will likely be Iraola’s biggest challenge in football to date, Scott is certain his former manager has the personality to command the dressing room at Anfield.“He has done it with us and, obviously, Liverpool is a bigger club and a massive club in the Premier League, but I believe there is no reason why he can’t go in there and be a top manager and take them back to the level they were at,” he added. On what Iraola has done for him as a player, Scott could not have been more effusive.“I feel like I have had his trust,” he continued. Defensively, maybe in my first two seasons, I wasn’t at the level to be playing in the Premier League, and that is something I had to learn from the players ahead of me in the team.“But he put his trust in me from the first game of the season, and I played 34 full games this year, so that is something to be really proud of. The manager has been amazing for me, working with me going forward, defensively, (and) being more aggressive.”Iraola led Bournemouth to European qualification for the first time in the club’s 127-year history (Matthew Lewis/Getty Images)Scott arrived in Florida with the England squad on June 1 as one of the five players — along with Rio Ngumoha, Josh King, Ethan Nwaneri and Jason Steele — to help cover for Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Crystal Palace’s Dean Henderson following their involvement in European finals. The former Bristol City player has impressed Thomas Tuchel, the England head coach, with his quality as a player and his attitude and came close to making his final 26-man squad list for the World Cup.Scott is in line to make his England debut in one of their pre-World Cup friendlies against New Zealand on June 6 and Costa Rica on June 10 before returning home after the pre-tournament camp. When Tuchel informed Scott he would not be part of the World Cup squad, he then asked him whether he would be keen to help them prepare in Florida, which, he says, was an incredibly easy decision.“I said yes straight away. It took me two seconds to say, ‘Of course I want to come and be part of the group for the prep camp’,” Scott said. “It is what you dream of as a kid to play for your country.“I haven’t got my cap yet, but even being here and being around so many top players who will hopefully go on and win the trophy for us, being a fan first and foremost and watching so many tournaments, it is great being part of this group and seeing how they work day to day and seeing what goes into a World Cup preparation.”
