THE KZN Department of Education (DoE) is investigating a protest at Strelitzia Secondary School after pupils damaged property and assaulted a teacher in response to the closure of an amagwinya (vetkoek) shop, which allegedly misused school fees.

The sale of the amagwinya came to a halt after the school governing body (SGB) alleged that senior staff at the school were using school fees money to operate the shop from the home economics classroom.

The SGB’s investigations allegedly uncovered that R19,000 had been taken from the school fees money and was not paid.

It has also been alleged that the profits from the amagqinya sales were not used to uplift the school and remained unaccounted for.
