MANILA, Philippines — Following the Senate leadership change, former four-time Senate president Franklin Drilon on Thursday said that the recent events in the upper chamber are related to the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte and the 2028 national and local elections.
Tensions grew in the Senate on Wednesday as the leadership reorganization vacated all Senate seats and installed Senator Sherwin Gatchalian as the Senate president pro tempore, despite the contention of the other senators under the bloc of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.
After two days of having no Senate sessions, quorum was declared on Wednesday after Senator Francis Escudero showed up in the plenary hall. Escudero’s arrival completed the 12 needed senators to oust all Senate leadership positions except the Senate president.
“That is clear to me (all of these) because of the 2028 elections and the upcoming impeachment trial,” Drilon said in an interview with Inquirer.
