Madurai Station Redevelopment work that has seen 50% of progress was likely to be completed as per its schedule of March 2027, said Madurai MP Su. Venkatesan.After inspecting the underconstruction works along with senior railway official here on Thursday, the MP said that majority of the basic infrastructure of the new buildings has been completed. Only the work of constructing air concourse structure over the railway platforms was yet to commence, he said.Mr. Venkatesan said that the officials have been instructed to take up the work of the mega project without causing much inconvenience to the 51,000 passengers using the railway station daily, especially during the ensuing rainy days.The infrastructure being created for Madurai Railway junction would take care of the needs of the passengers for the next 40 years, the MP added.The project being executed at a cost of ₹347 crore will see the size of terminal building increasing from mere 2,500 square metre to 22,000 sq. m.The size of the passenger waiting areas -- both AC and non-AC -- is being increased manifold.“We can see large number of tourists sleeping on the platforms due to lack of adequate waiting area. Now, that issue is being addressed,” he added.While the existing AC waiting area was that of 450 sq. m., the new building would have AC waiting area of 1,090 sq. m. Similarly, the non-AC waiting area would increase from 301 sq. m. to a whopping 4,792 sq. m.The number of retiring rooms would will go from 25 (456 sq. m.) to 40 spacious rooms (1,840 sq. m.).The officials have also planned to introduce dormitory facility with beds for 47 male and 25 female.Other salient feature of the redevelopment station building would be parking lots for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.Two-wheeler parking facility (on the surface) will increase from 1,000 vehciles to 7,420 vehicles. Multi-level bike parking would have increased holding area for 251 bikes from 100 bikes.Similarly, the surface level parking of four-wheelers will increase from 100 vehcicles to 203 vehicles.The premium car parking (surface level) will have space for 50 vehicles, an increase for the present 25 vehicles.Two new multiple level car parking lots would come up for 250 vehicles on Eastern entrance and 60 vehicles on Western entrance, the MP said.During the interaction with the officials, the MP suggested that 40% commercial area proposed in the new air concourse building should not create space constraint for the free movement of passengers.The number of escalators would increase to 27 from the existing six and the number of elevators would go up to 37 from the present four, he added.The new facility will also have food court and buget hotel.Madurai Deputy Mayor Nagarajan, Additional Divisional Railway Manager V. Prasanna, Chief Engineer Construction S.P. Singh, Deputy Chief Engineer K.G. Gnansekar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager D.L. Ganesh, and Senior Divisional Enginer (Coordination) M.
