This post, first published on Monday, June 1, has been updated to reflect exactly which iPhones for which this update is relevant, and more details of the release, and its timing, coming just before iOS 27 is revealed. The new iPhone update is here, three weeks since the major-point iOS 26.5 release which landed on Monday, May 11. This large update is designed to fix issues rather than introduce major new features, including a problem with charging nearly drained batteries on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Here’s all you need to know. ForbesApple iOS 27 Release Date: When You Can Download And Test The New iPhone UpdateBy David PhelanWhich iPhones Can Run iOS 26.5.1?Unlike other iOS 26 updates, this one is available to five phones only: iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air.This is highly unusual, and reflects the fact that the update is all about one thing: fixing a battery bug on the phones for which it’s designed. As such, it’s no surprise that this is not a Background Security Improvements update as those are all about security fixes. Apple’s support website specifies that “this update has no published CVE entries,” that is, there are no security fixes here.MORE FOR YOUHow To Download And Install iOS 26.5.1Since this is a regular update, not a Background Security Improvements version, updating takes a familiar course. Go to the Settings app on the iPhone and choose General, followed by Software Update. Here you’ll find Download and Install, and it’ll be downloaded promptly. It’s a sizeable update, 17.44GB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max, but the size of the update will depend on how long ago you previously updated the phone. iOS 26.5.1 — What’s In The ReleaseThis is what’s called a minor-point update, though it’s much bigger than these usually are. There have been several in recent months which introduced new features and had zero security implications, and this one is all about fixes. “This update addresses an issue for a small number of users that may prevent wired charging on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models when the battery is nearly drained,” Apple said in its release notes. As mentioned above, this means iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. And while it doesn’t preclude any other fixes are here, the fact that it’s just for these five handsets seems to confirm that there’s a very specific purpose here. The issue was explained in clear terms by Mashable, which added a useful detail not everybody may know about, the value of a wireless charging pad. “There was a known issue where those particular phones would be stubborn about turning back on if plugged into a wired charger after running out of battery. Putting them on a wireless charger for 10 to 15 minutes would fix it, but obviously, not everyone has one of those lying around. If Apple is to be believed, this isn't a problem anymore.”As other reports have pointed out, most anecdotal commentary about this issue related to people whose iPhone 17 or iPhone Air had completely drained, rather than “nearly,” as Apple put it.And it all comes just days before the unveiling of iOS 27, which will happen at WWDC on Monday, June 8. Several commenters have said that the next software cycle is all about making the interface smoother and easier to use. Which means that sudden hardware-oriented updates may not be so common when the next software launches this fall.
