Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has highlighted the strategic importance of the Vertical Corridor infrastructure initiative during talks with his newly elected Bulgarian counterpart, Rumen Radev, saying the project could strengthen energy security and transport links across southeastern Europe.
Mitsotakis said the Vertical Gas Corridor was enhancing the geopolitical role of both countries by enabling them to supply energy to states further north in Europe.
The Vertical Corridor is a strategic energy initiative linking Greece with southeastern and central Europe through a network of natural gas pipelines and infrastructure that enables the flow of gas, particularly US liquefied natural gas (LNG), from Greek terminals to create a north‑south gas transport axis through Ukraine.
He also outlined a broader vision of a land corridor linking Greek ports to Ukraine through a network of highways and railways passing through Bulgaria and Romania.
“Connectivity issues are at the very core of our cooperation,” Mitsotakis said, adding that Greece and Bulgaria could secure substantial European funding for the initiative.
